Nko is a generic name for a group of Mande languages. It includes all the people who start their speech with the word Nko. At the same time. Solomana Kante who invented a script for these languages, called his writing system Nko. So, Nko is a language as well as a writing system.

In these days, peoples don't agree on the number of Nko speakers. However, we think that the Mande language is spoken in a number of countries with a varying percentage. According to statistics, the speakers of Nko as native and non native together is over 35 million people.

If you say Nko, that is a sum of dialects put together under the banner "Nko". There are four major dialects among them: Maninkakan, that is a lousy way of saying the Mande language; Bamanankan; Mandigokan; and Julakan. We call all of these languages, but they are not one; they are dialects of Nko. That is why any Maninkakan speaker who hears Julakan/Bamanankan or Mandingokan would say that these people are speaking the Mande language. The names are simply names because there is a difference in the accents used by a particular group, which does not cause a misunderstanding among the speakers of the different dialects.
