Unit Introduction Aims To teach students how to use appropriate words applicable to greetings and take leave of people at a different time of the day in Kinyarwanda. Prerequisites There is no prerequisite for this first unit except for the availability and willingness of students to learn Kinyarwanda. Detailed Description In this unit, we will be dealing with different ways of greetings in Kinyarwanda. On one hand the term “uraho” which is used when two people are engaged in greetings. On the other hand, we use the term “muraho” when two people are engaged in greetings with respect and when you greet more than one person. In this case, “muraho” is the plural of “uraho”. For example when a student greets a teacher, he may say “Muraho Mwarimu”. But when he/she greets his/her colleague, he/she may say “uraho”. Another example: When Sano greets Higiro and Gahunde, he wiil say “muraho” because they are two people. Estimated Time ≈4.00hours Objectives use ‘uraho’ and ‘muraho’ for general greetings. use ‘muraho’ to greet many people or one person with respect. use other ways of greetings such as Waramutse/mwaramutse; Waramutseho/mwaramutseho; Wiriwe/mwiriwe; Wiriweho/mwiriweho as applied to the time of the day. use Wirirwe/mwirirwe; Wirirweho/mwirirweho; Uramuke/muramuke; Urabeho/murabeho at different times of the day Required Materials Pencil, pen, notebook,a multimedia system comprising of a projector, speakers, and a computer.
